Share your tips for centering images in table cells
I could really use some advice about how to center images in table cells. What I usually do is insert the image, then go to "more layout options" and choose "centered" for both horizontal and vertical. The horizontal usually works very good, but I'm having one heck of a time with vertical. For horizontal it says centered "relative to column," but for vertical there's not a "row" option. It says "page," "line," "top margin," etc. I don't know which one I should select. And besides this, even after I set vertical and horizontal, the settings don't stick.
If I set it to "absolute position," I can set it and when I look at the image it doesn't move at all and when I go back and look at my setting, it's changed. I've tried setting the cell alignment to "centered" both horizontally and vertically but even this doesn't always work. I can get it centered but then if I change the size of the cell at all the image moves out of center. I have text wrapping set to Top and Bottom which should make the image float free, but when I grab the image and try to center it, it won't stick or moves to the top or bottom and won't go anywhere else. Arrrrgggggg! This is driving me NUTS! |

Hi Walt,
It's quite easy to get the horizontal centering if you insert the image in-line with text and have the paragraph into which you insert the image centered and with equal left/right indents. For the vertical centering, format the cell's vertical alignment as centered and ensure the paragraph before/after settings equal.

Hi macropod, thanks for your input. I'm not quite sure what I would need to do to "ensure the paragraph before/after settings equal." I'm not new to Word but there's still a lot I'm not familiar with.
I did find a way though that's pretty fast and works good. I discovered you can move images up and down with the arrow keys, so I just center horizontally and then move them where I want them. It moves in small increments and I can get them exactly where I want them. At least I was finally able to make some headway after hours of struggling. |

Hi Walt,
To ensure the paragraph before/after settings equal, simply select the paragraphs concerned and choose Paragraph > Indents and Spacing, then make sure the space before and after are the same. Your ability to move the images around indicates they're not formatted in-line with text; they're probably formatted 'square'. You can make the movement increments finer by selcting an image and then, on the 'Picture Tools' tab, click on Arrange > Align > Grid Settings and setting the horizonatl & vertical grids to very small values (IIRC you can go as small as 0.25pt, or 0.01cm).

Ahhh, thanks for that clarification. And thanks for the tip about the Grid Settings. I think the "Snap" feature is what was causing all the problems. I turned it off and now the images don't jump all around on their own. I didn't even know Word had that. I've got a 668-page Word 2007 for Dummies and I get the feeling there's a lot it's not telling me.
