Default Image Quality When Saving Word Document as HTML

When saving a Word document as a web page (html), the quality of the images is extremely poor. Math equations are saved as gif files, which used to be just fine (in Word 2003, for example), because the quality of the image was fine. But in the version of Word in Office 2013 the saved images are terrible. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? (By the way, the poor quality gif files are actually larger than the good quality gif files for the same images created by the old Word, so it isn't that they are being saved at a lower resolution.)

The problem described above applies to running the latest Word in Compatibility mode, with documents originally created in Word 2003. But when operating in Normal mode, the new Word does an even worse job of rendering images in html files. Math equations are offset vertically, so they are superimposed on the surrounding text. This happens regardless of whether I select text wrap or any other mode.

Can anyone tell me how to make the new Word work as well as the old Word when saving images in html?

Given that Word is not primarily an HTML editor, I'm wondering whether creating your equations in MathML for direct use in HTML pages might be an option? Well outside my everyday domain, but here's a couple of links:

In Word 2013, under File / Options / Advanced / Image Size and Quality, you can check the box to tell Word "Do Not Compress Images in File" and you can also change the default output to 220 ppi.

I have no idea whether this would affect saving a Word document as a web page or saving equations as graphics ... but you could play with it and see if it helps

The Save As dialog box Tools / Web Options also allows you to choose a screen size and pixels per inch for the monitor you plan to view the web page on. Presumably graphics would be saved in higher quality if you choose 1920x1200 and 120 ppi
