Default Bullet indentations unexpected change

Greetings,

I have a document using number bullets. The indentations are 1/4 inch. Suddenly, I have a bullet with a 1/2 inch indentation!? I can't get it to behave. I do have some tabbing above the problem. How can I fix?

1. abc

2. cde

x [tab] y

3. fgh

Windows 7
Office 2010

Thanks,
Rich

Sorry.

Bullets need to be tied to Styles to work properly if they are in a document that is heavily edited.

See How to control bullets in Word 2007 and Word 2010.

To reliably change the indentation of a numbered or bulleted list you have to use the Adjust List Indents command. Click a number/bullet symbol; Word selects all the items in the list (or all the items on that same level if this is a multilevel list). Right-click and choose Adjust List Indents from the context menu.

An even safer approach is to define a paragraph style, as Charles suggests.
