Default Word to PDF with print date

I have a template that I have created for a client. I need to add to this template a date printed field that will be saved and work when the file is exported to pdf. Can this be done and how? Help greatly appreciated!

How about selecting the location within your template and using the "Date & Time" menu from the "Insert" ribbon to select the date/time format and checking the "Update Automattically" box? This should work for you.

Hope this helps...

Will that carry through when exported to a pdf? The print date has to be when the user actually prints the pdf file (not prints the word to a pdf file) hope that makes sense.

My first thought is, No, it would not...not setup as I mentioned. I believe it would require a process using the Adobe Acrobat software to create automatic updates to the date field when printed.

Because I am not privy to that process I will step back and let those more proficient in the process to advise.

I see how you can program Word and you can program Acrobat to do this - but it is the transition from one to the other that I really need help on.

If you are saving this file to PDF, you can add a SAVEDATE field to the document. If you're using a PDF print driver, you can use a PRINTDATE field.

Do note, though, that Word cannot add a field to the PDF that will update when the PDF gets printed. You'd need Adobe Acrobat Pro or similar for that.

Thanks - that is what I thought would be true but needed to know for sure. Do you know anything more about Acrobat - as is there a way to create a macro that could be run on each document after it is created? Probably this is the wrong place to ask, but I couldn't resist since I was here!

Word can automate Adobe Acrobat Pro (not the free reader) for data extraction or for populating a PDF's fillable fields.
