Exclamation Formatting- Apply changes to highlighted text results in same change to other text

Has anyone figured out how to fix this?

-Word 2007 document edited on a Windows 7 PC-

I keep a word document of my repertoire of songs, tips, and programs for my job. This document is MY LIFE. I am constantly adding to it, and it is running into 300 pages. It's well-built with internal hyperlinks.

Unless I use format painter, if I highlight text and imput a change to the text via the menu ribbon, other text in the document that is NOT highlighted receives the same change. This is very frusterating.

I have employed styles in the passed, but eventually those stopped working.
The entire document is Arial, and only varies in size, colour, and the usual B, I, or U

Has anyone else found that formatting goes to heck after a while, and how did you fix it?

This is a long-standing problem with an option setting in Word.
See Formatting applied to one paragraph affects the entire document.

My preference generally is to leave this setting off. I generally apply any formatting to a document I plan on editing or using for a while using Styles rather than direct formatting.

Talking yahoo!~

Oh my goodness! I think it worked, I've been playing around with directly changing a bunch of text, and it seems to only affect that text.

I did have to try twice, but it worked!

Wow! Thank you!

sorry to keep up the questions, I need to add a twist this time:

Essentially this document lives on a network drive, and I access it from multiple computers. - Will the settings on each individual computer affect the document?

It seems that the Alt + F11 + CommandG Intermediate + code + enter +save = does not always work. Text not highlighted will still change, despite multiple attempts.

I have also played around with completely deleting styles, hoping that would solve my problem, but apparently that really screws it up - especially my hyperlinks - they just look like regular text, and it won't let me modify the text directly after I reinsert the hyperlinks style back. (Hope this makes sense) Whatever.

I have gone back to a backup copy of my document (before I deleted the styles) and I'm wondering --- BECAUSE some of the computers that I access the document on run Office 2010 (Not 2007 - how do I fix this now?)

Sorry to keep kicking a dead topic, but this has been so frusterating and I don't like to waste work time being inefficient!

Also, not sure if this is related, but a while back, word asked me if I wanted to save in macro form (.docm) and since my document was getting quite large, I said okay. Do you think this might be affecting my text changes too?

Last question, first: Whether the macro is making any difference depends on what the macro does. I would be surprised if it were the cause, though.

The automatically adopt formatting changes as styles is a per-style setting, not a document setting or an application-wide setting. So long as the document, itself, is not set to automatically update styles from the template, the settings in your document's styles will control.

See http://wordribbon.tips.net/T011159_M...matically.html for a macro that can be used to set all styles in a document to not update automatically from formatting.

Note that when a style is based upon another style, the setting in the underlying style will control unless it is specifically turned off in the dependent style.

Understanding Styles in Microsoft Word

As you have discovered, Word does not function without styles. Trying to use it without using styles is an exercise in frustration. You will be fighting the program.

I would strongly recommend that you take some time to learn all you can about styles. The time you spend reading the following articles will repay itself very quickly, and then you will be saving time (and angst).
