Default Trying to make a long list sequential.

I'm working with a large document with a list that was entered manually (no numbered list).

Several sections needed to be removed and now the numbering needs to be made sequential.

Is there anyway to fix this without correcting each numbered section individually?

Thank you for your help!

Short answer: no. You will have to do something with each number to get it to automatic.

You might be able to do a find looking for the wild cards of numbers and then enter a SEQ field there to replace it. This could be done with a macro, I'm sure, but you have to be able to tell the macro which numbers you want replaced.

Ideally most outline numbering is done using numbering tied to styles as set forth in How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Word 2007 and Word 2010. However, that does involve syles. The SEQ field is far older technology and is virtually bullet-proof.

See Numbering in Microsoft Word.

Tell us more about the relationship between the sections and the manually-numbered list.
