help! can't seem to find this problem's solution. I trust it is a simple thing caused by some error made inadvertently. please advise

Make sure the appropriate keyboard layout (input language) has been activated in Windows.

Are we aiming for É? for occasional accented characters, I'm a fan of the Windows Character map: pick a character directly if it's a one off, or make a note of the Alt+ code if it's one you might need more often. (alt + 0201 for É, by the way, and remember to use the numeric keypad)
