Default Deleting a numbered section and updating subsequent numbers

I'm working with a manual that someone else created and I'm not exactly sure how to proceed. I know she at least has things formatted into Heading 1 and Heading 2 but I can't figure out how to tell what else she did and how to delete a section and have the following section numbers updated.

If I open the Navigation Page I see:

Article I. Overview
Section 1.01 History
Section 1.02 Purpose

Article II. Software
Section 2.01 Products
Section 2.02 Product Keys
Section 2.03 Licenses
Article III. Hardware
Section 3.01 Computers
Section 3.02 Printers
Section 3.03 Network Equipment

And so on and so on....

I would like to delete section 10 all together but I can't figure out how to get section 11 to update to 10 and all the following numbers update with it. Sorry if I'm not making sense... I can't figure out how to search this! I've found plenty of help on creating multi level lists and automatic TOC etc. but can't figure out how to remove one part of it and have the rest of it update numbers correctly!

Thanks in advance!

Are you sure the creator of the document actually made use of auto numbering? Perhaps numbers were typed in?

If it is using an AutoNumbered list, they will update. It is hard to prevent them from updating when you remove a section and want to maintain the numbering (non-continuous but historical).

If you are going to have to renumber a lot, you may want to consider setting up a true numbering list based on styles and applying that where you want the numbers. It would be a little extra work now, maybe, but would pay off in the long run. How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Word 2007 and Word 2010

Thanks for the help guys! It turns out she DID type in the numbers.... so I removed all numbers and re-applied the heading 1, 2, 3 style to the correct parts and they numbered correctly!
