Stay on UK English PERMANENTLY
I have changed languages on my home and work computers for writing a novel. Yet Word keeps changing back to US English. Very annoying. How do I make it stick and not revert to old bad habits by using merkan. (say it like George W. Bush)

How did you change languages? Did you also turn off the "Detect language automatically" option in the Language dialog box?
