entire document instantly hyphenated

hyphens were inserted between every word and the "paragraph icon" ( i assume thats what its called) was displayed after every paragraph. any clues as to what i may have done the document was typed perfectly then the hyphens etc "miraculously" appeared

Select the menu 'Tools -> Options', uncheck all options below 'Formatting masks'.
