Docx to PDF: Exclude heading from TOC but include in bookmarks
I'm currently working on a document (docx, Word 2010, 64 bit Windows 7) and I'm using the headings for an automatically generated table of contents as well as automatically generated bookmarks. For conversion to PDF I'm using the Adobe Acrobat X Word plugin. I have to do that because the document used Adobe OTF fonts that will not be converted correctly with Word's own PDF converter.
Here's the issue: I want one of the heading appear as bookmarks, but NOT in the TOC. So far I have only managed to do it the other way round (in TOC, no bookmarks). Can anyone help? |

Update: I tried to do this by changing the outline level of all titles that are supposed to appear as PDF bookmarks to from Body Text to outline level 2 and the exclude this level from the TOC. It doesn't work; Word simply reverts the change and goes back to Body Text.

Which headings don't you want in the TOC? If it's the headings for a particular level, you can customize the TOC field code. Post back with the details of what you are trying to accomplish.

What I'm trying to accomplish is simple: I want custom headings 1 and 2 (which are also on outline levels 1 and 2) to appear in the TOC and as PDF bookmarks, whereas heading 3 (which is on outline level 2, not 3) should only appear as a PDF bookmark.
I found out how to exclude heading 3 from the TOC, but a new issue has arisen: I can't change a heading's outline level. It just doesn't work and is always reverted by Word. |

I think you will have to replace Heading 3 with a custom style (whose outline level is 2).

I found the issue: For some reason, Adobe PDF does NOT accept heading placed inside a chart for making bookmarks. Odd.

Limitations like that are rather common, I'm afraid. For example, Word can't display a heading inside a table cell in the Navigation pane. :-(
Are you saying that everything is working the way you want it now?

Yes. I had to put a border around the headings that originally were in the table to let them appear as still in the table, though. Oddly enough, Word does accept them for the TOC... but also not for its bookmarks when I use the build-in save-as-PDF function of Word.
Thanks for your help. |
