Default Protect a document so it can't be overwritten

I create documents that are saved to the server for all employees to use (memo templates, timesheets, request forms, ect.).
However the people I work with continuously save their information on the master copy.



Is there a way to save/protect the master copy, so people can make changes - any changes they want - but when they save - they MUST "save as" and a new file name?

Using Microsoft Office 2010 - saving as 97-2003 Compatible

Hi Pumkin,

Your post suggests you're working with documents, rather than with Word templates. If you save each document as a template (using the 'templates' file type from the Save As dialogue) and store them in the appropriate folder, anytime a user wants a new file, all they need do is to double-click the template or choose it via File|New and what they'll get is a new document based on the template, rather than the template itself. The only way to save such a document is via Save As.

You need to be using templates as Paul said.
Templates in Microsoft Word
Using documents the way you are instead of templates is just asking for the problems you are experiencing.

Your users need to know to not Open the templates. If they double-click on them from within Windows, they will create a new document. Otherwise, if they use File New to access the templates that will also create a new document.

The chapter I linked to is long, but if you are running an office with multiple Word users you need every bit of information in it.
