I am using crossreference for numbered paragraphs like the following:
(3) a. I finally ate today at almost 1pm... b. I usually don't eat on game day but I ate today for some reason. It shows up at the insertion point as (3), and if I insert letters it shows up as ((3)a). But I do not want to have two parentheses here and want to have it as (3a). Is there a way to remove the inside parenthesis? I am using Word 07, but I wonder if later version support that function. Also, in the crossreference dialogue box I see in the right pulldown menu options like: Paragraph number Paragraph number (no context) Paragraph number (full context) Could someone explain what their difference is? Thanks. |

Unfortunately, there is no way to suppress separators in cross-references.

For your second question, consider the following example:
1) Level one a) Level two 2) Level one a) Level two The "Paragraph number (full context)" option always include a full reference, for example to "1)a)" while the "Paragraph number (no context)" option never does. In this case, the latter might be unclear, because a reference to "a)" could mean either "1)a)" or "2)a)". The "Paragraph number" option includes the full context if necessary; otherwise it doesn't. For example, if a reference to "1)a)" is located under "2)" then you would see the full reference. But if the reference is under "1)" you would only see "a)".

Thank you for your reply. I tried the three options and made no difference to the example I used in my initial question. Is this because only the number is automatically numbered and not the letters, so Word does not see any more context than just the number?

If you moved around the cross-references during your testing, did you remember to update them? Select all content (Ctrl+A) and then update fields with F9. You should now see the difference.
Note that if you are using a number format which includes higher levels, such as "1, 1.1, 1.1.1, ...", then all options will give you the same result.
