Default Code for shading part of a word

Assume I want to shade (White, background 1, darker 15%) part of

MISCELLANEOUS

Assume also that the word is in notepad.

Can I imbed code for shading in the notepad file so that if I copy & paste the word it will be shaded in Word?

Thanks.

Notepad doesn't support any kind of character formatting, so the answer has to be no. You could, however, use HTML coding in the notepad file, save that in the htm format, then open it with Word. Word will then render the HTML coding.

For the example you gave, the text file would contain:
<html>
<p class=MsoNormal>MIS<span style='background:#D9D9D9'>CELLANE</span>OUS</p>
</html>

Thanks Paul that works.

What I meant to include Word control codes in the notepad document just like a tab character which is picked up Word.

Tab characters, though, are just as much characters as any letter you may type. That's a completely different issue from character formatting, which Notepad doesn't support. The example I gave is what you need to embed the kind of formatting control you referred to.

But I don't care how it looks in Notepad.

When I copy & paste to Word it has to look the desired way.

Your html solution is fine. I will go with it if there is no alternative.

I just wonder if Word format control codes can be imbedded in a notepad document which is saved as a flat file.

Thanks.
