Default Word 2013: Hyperlinks in word created pdf open in web browser and not acrobat reader

I have been using Word 2013 to create documents with hyperlinks which are then saved as as pdf. When viewing the file using acrobat reader then clicking on the links in the pdf opens the next document in the default web browser (chrome) rather than in acrobat reader.

If I disable the pdf plug-ins in chrome then clicking on the hyperlinks just brings me to a save file dialog box.

If I view the pdf file using my pdf package (Nitro 9) then the blue hyperlink whilst appearing blue does not function as a hyperlink.

Finally if I validate the pdf as part of a submission package using the eCTD EURSValidator tool the pdf is flagged as being non compliant because it does not contain the required hyperlinks.

If I take the same word file and create the pdf using nitro then the the hyperlinks behave as expected. The next document opens in whichever pdf reader I am using (and not in chrome). Hyperlinks are recognised by Nitro as well as by acrobat.

Consequently there appears to be an issue with hyperlinks in pdf documents created by Word 2013. How do I get hyperlinks in pdf documents produced by Word to behave correctly ?

I'm still interested in how to get hyperlinks in word to work correctly when the document is saved as a pdf. I need them to open in the pdf viewer and not in a web browser

I would expect hyperlinks to be dealt with by the default browser, which then "redirects" to whatever program should open the specific file type that the hyperlink points to—your PDF reader in this case. This is how Internet Explorer does it, at least. Have you tried Firefox (if you don't like IE)?

Hi Stefan

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately the problem is not solved by changing my browser. I can use the same word file and create two pdf versions. One by using 'save as' and selecting pdf and the second by using the acrobat add-in.

If I then load each pdf into acrobat reader then the pdf generated by word opens hyperlinks in a web browser whereas the pdf from acrobat opens in acrobat reader. The latter I believe is the correct behaviour.

This may seem a trivial issue however I use a word macro to scan a complex set of subdirectories all containing word documents, each word document is opened and some actions done and then resaved. Following this I need to reconvert the word docs to pdf for use. It's possible to save as pdf from within the macro but not to save as pdf using the acrobat add-in (acrobat have removed this facility from acrobat XI and possible earlier version of acrobat). Nor is it possible to get acrobat to convert all files in a set of sub directories.

Getting word to produce correct hyperlink behaviour would save me a lot of time manually processing pdf files by acrobat.

Were you able to find a solution to this? I just started using Office 2013, and I am experiencing the same problem with my PDF links from files created in Word.

Different applications deal with hyperlinks in different ways; I don't think there is a way to change that.

For example, a link in your browser will always open in the browser, but the browser, in turn, will redirect to whichever PDF reader is your default. Word does it the same way: if the hyperlink is on the internet (with for example a path starting with http), the default browser tries to open the document; if it's a PDF, a PDF application window opens within a browser window.
