Unhappy Caption numbering problems

I have a multi chapter document. The Chapters are designated as Heading 1. On inserting a caption to a table in Chapter 4, I see Table 4.1 correctly within the Caption window. On clicking OK, the caption is headed as Table 0.1, not 4.1 in the document

What am I doing wrong? I don't have any problem with the numbering in the other chapters.

Thanks in advance for your help

PS. I've attached just the part of the document that is giving me problems with that. Any help will be very much appreciated!

The paragraph to which one of your pictures are anchored was inadvertently formatted in Heading 1 style (with numbering suppressed). This explains the zero in the chapter-numbered caption. I'm returning the file here and I have applied Normal style.

Default Caption numbering

Hi Stefan - I have the same problem with caption numbering. I attach an example which I hope gives you an idea of the problem. I've tried using your example but can't seem to crack it. I'd be very grateful for help - there are 100s of Figures and Tables in the document!
Kind regards, Grimalkin

I am assuming you want the following figure to be automatically numbered Figure 1.2 rather than 0.2. To do this, you need to have numbering linked to your heading 1 style.

See How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly for instructions on how to do this. It is important that you follow all of the steps.

Once you have created the numbering, you can update your figure captions and they should include your chapter numbers.

Hi Charles

Thanks for this but as far as I can tell Heading 1 is set up correctly. I've done several similar exercises without any hassle so I'm not sure what the problem is with this document.

I'll read the info you sent.

Stefan Blom handled a similar problem by advising that the table/figure to which the caption is attached should be in the 'Normal' style. Again, I thought I'd done this.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks again,

Regards

Assuming that numbering is correctly setup for the heading styles, make sure that you don't have a blank paragraph (in Heading 1 style) whose numbering has been suppressed.

Looking at your example document, updating the field seems to fix the problem. Just select the caption and press F9.

Hi Stefan Thanks for the response. Pressing F9 did work on the sample I sent you earlier, but not on the actual document, so I've sent you the first pages to see if you can help. I am very grateful for your help on this. Regards, G

When I updated your captions, they were correct.
Select caption and press F9. I didn't do anything else.

Hi Charles - thanks for this but something isn't right somewhere! When I try this on my document there is a problem. Can you tell me how to find the blank paragraph in Heading 1 that Stefan mentioned? Am at my wits end (such as they are!) with this one. I'm sure it's something simple. Regards G

You can search for a style in the Advanced Find dialog. (see 2nd screenshot)

You can also use the Navigation Pane to look for an unnumbered paragraph in the Heading 1 style. (see 1st screenshot)
