Default What is this box? Word expert needed!

I am trying to add photos to a Word document. I want to be able to put the photo at a place on the page (for example the top or bottom), add a label to it (saying what it is) and then have text flow past it: i.e. if I add text to the paragraph above it, the photo and label won't move, rather the text will flow past it.

After fooling around a bit, I was able to do this, see attached screen shot. But I'm not sure what I did! I just know it kind of works. But not knowing what it is, makes it hard to try and read up on it, to learn how to use it. I don't know if that's a frame or a text box, or what. I can't replicate it, i just copy and paste the first one I did, and then change the picture and label.

And it acts weird at times: I'll paste a box on one page ans a large gap in the text will appear on a previous page... Positioning it is also difficult.

Note: I can select the photo itself (or the label) separately from the box.

Can anyone tell me what I am working with, and point me to a good place to read up on it???

Thanks!
Dan
