Default Word 2010 table of content - font

hi

i have used three styles in my word 2010 document and am creating a table of content using built in TOC with modifications.

The second level of headings are all formatted as normal text (i.e. first letter capital and others non capital). However in the TOC this level appears as capital. I have checked TOC style and it is not set to "all caps". I have also ensured that none of the used styles have "automatically update" box ticked!

can someone help.

ta

If you display the TOC field code, what does it say? Press Alt+F9 to show/hide field codes.

Chances are that Heading 2 isn't mapped to the TOC 2 style (which it is by default) but to some other style. Its formatting will then be controlled by that other TOC style.

Pressing Alt +F9 reveals this code: {TOC \O "1-2" \H\Z\U}

And on the same note one more question. how do i find out which TOC style is used in the document. Normally i select text and see which Style is highlighted in "styles" box in top bar. But with TOC i cant see any highlights despite scralling through all available options.

The TOC 1 style controls the formatting of level 1 entries in the table of contents, TOC 2 controls the formatting of level 2 entries, etc.

Your TOC field, or more specifically the \o "1-2" switch, tells me that styles whose "Outline level" (as seen in the Paragraph dialog box) is 1 or 2 are included in the TOC. Heading 1 paragraphs always have Outline level 1, and Heading 2 paragraphs always have "Outline level" 2; this is hardcoded and can't be changed. In this case, you should modify the TOC 2 style, which corresponds to Heading 2. Is that what you have been doing?
