Pasted pictures go all over the place, not at the cursor
Would anyone have any idea why when I paste pictures in a Word 2007 .doc they never go where the cursor is? They go all over the place, sometimes two or three pages above, or the end of the page, etc. I can just grab and drag 'em where they need to be but it's getting very annoying. How can I stop this behavior. Thanks
P.S. I'm copying the pictures from another Word document, not inserting. |

Flying images
Walt, this is a typical but usually easy to solve problem. The images usually have text wrapping setting to something other than inline and therefore respond to placement commands corresponding to their previous placements.
Select an image, right-click, select Text-wrapping from the pop-up menu, and then Inline, the first choice. This should bring it to the paragraph in which you had your cursor when you pasted the image. To place the image subsequently, return to the drop down menu but select More layout options at the bottom of the list. Set the text wrapping (for instance, to Square), then either drag the image or specify parameter on the Position tab of he dialogue box. Hope this helps. ULodesk |

It could also be that they are NOT Inline, but have an Anchor. In which case it sometimes happens the anchor is attached to a unexpected paragraph.

fuemi, I've noticed all the images do have anchors. Are they necessary and can a person get rid of them?

Anchors away
Walter,
At the bottom left of the Position tab in the dialogue box, you'll find a Lock Anchor box. Uncheck it to allow moving the anchor, which can then be dragged to the paragraph of choice. |

I do appreciate the efforts to help but I'm still having a lot of problems with images moving all over the place. I've been experimenting with Anchor Lock and Move objects with text to try and find the best setting, text wrap also. I'll keep plowing ahead.

IF you post a page with a sample, I can probably solve the problem for you.
You can fill a page with nonsense text quickly , if you prefer, by typing =rand(6,6) and pressing Enter. Then copy it for a second page. Paste in a photo or two, letting them land where they may. |

As I think about it, since there are not many parameters governing image placement, I am wondering if your images are in some other container or something, though this would, I expect, have become evident. I know the frustration of such problem, however. A sample may make short work of the solving the problem.

Reading through the thread again: Let me clarify the anchor business. If an image is, say, three paragraphs below its anchor, dragging the anchor will tend to drag the images along with it, at the same distance, possibly jumping to a new page. Therefore, you must first select the image and set its text wrapping to Inline. Again, this move the image to the anchor position. Then, as long as the anchor is not locked (which prevents moving it away from the paragraph), you can move the image to a different paragraph, after which you may then, by changing the wrapping to square, move the image to the right, align it with the margin, etc.
Hope this helps. |

Actually that does help me understand anchors a lot better. I think between that and Move object with text, I should be a lot better off. Appreciate it.
