Default start a new numbering system in a table column

Hi. I am creating a document which has a multilevel list of numbers and bullets. I want to have a table which has the exact same list in both columns to facilitate a translation into another language. I first write the list on the right and then insert a column to the left. Word then creates exactly the same multilevel list in the new column. So far so good. The only problem is that the numbers are a continuation from the right hand column. I have tried pressing restart numbering but it does not work. The numbers are: right column 1, left column 2. Then I have a number of lines of bullets which match perfectly. Then again right column 2, left column 3. Then another series of bullets which match perfectly and then right column 4, left column 5.

This is extremely frustrating!!

Can anyone help???!!!

Thanking you in advance.

In Word, sequential numbering will work the way you describe, whether it is a numbered list or a SEQ field. You are going to need two different list styles, one for the left side and one for the right.

If you are doing multilevel lists, you must set them up according to the instructions at
How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Word 2007 and Word 2010.

You could set one of your lists up to match with Headings 2-5 and the other to match with headings 6-9, giving you four levels each. This all has to be set up at the same time.
Otherwise, not using a table, you could use newspaper style (snaking) columns and use a column break to start the next column. This is going to be more of a challenge to keep lined up, though.

Thanks charles. The thing is that I pretty much change the style for every document it is not a rigid system. sometimes i use white bullets sometimes blacks. it all depends on the information.
I have a work around at the moment whereby i do the first language on top and continue the second languge below then convert text to table for both and insert column to the left and then paste the one table side by side to the other. the problem is it is time consuming. also in the english side i add a few bullets of explanation so i have to start merging cells and moving data around. for some reason the numbers are not connected when i do it that way and it matches perfectly. its just the time issue. i was thinking of making some sort of macro to do it for me, but i dont know how to do it nor know anyone who could do it for me.

is there a reason why word doesnt mess around the numbers when they have been made outside of the table?

Outside the table, they are in sequential order. In a table, the next position is the next cell to the right, then down.

Once you have the styles set up, you can modify the styles in individual documents. So long as you don't tinker with the levels you should be OK.
