I have a Word document that contains various images, which I added by using Insert:Picture:From File. The text in the document is formatted with an indent for the first line of each paragraph, and no indent for subsequent lines. I used the ruler at the top to create the indents.



I would like the images to be flush against the left margin. However, when I highlight an image and choose Align Left, it only goes over as far to the left as the indented first line of the paragraphs. If I highlight the image and move the box on the ruler to eliminate the indent, it does that, but it also eliminates the indent for whichever paragraph happens to surround the image.

So how do I format the document such that:

1. Images are flush left, not indented.
2. The first line of each paragraph is indented.
3. Subsequent lines of each paragraph are not indented?

Hi, Craig. The default for inserted images is that their text-wrapping is set to inline. What you need is square with alignment at left. I don't know of a way to do this except manually; the macro recorder doesn't seem to like my idea of setting the pictures alignment and text wrapping after it has been inserted, though someone might be able to write you a macro to do this.

Meanwhile, you can create a paragraph style that includes the first line indent, so that you don't have to recreate it each time. Then, after inserting the image, select it, press the context key and then Z (for the Size dialogue), or right-click and select Size and Position. On the Text Wrapping tab, select Square; on the Position tab, select Left relative to Column (or Margin).

Thanks Ulodesk. I understand a fair portion of your post, but I think I’m still doing something wrong.

After reading your post, I checked my document for the settings you describe. I didn’t change them; this is how they already were:

Under Format: Paragraph and then the Indents and Spacing Tab, it has:

Alignment: Left
Outline Level: Body text
Left: 0 px
Right: 112 px
Special: First line
By: 29 px

(I recently changed the measurement unit to pixels on Word because of other issues I was having with images, but I can change that back to something else if necessary.)

For the images, Under Format Picture and then the Layout tab, it has:

Wrapping style: “Square” is highlighted with a blue box along its perimeter.
Horizontal alignment: “Left” is selected with a blue dot in it.

I then clicked on Advanced while still in Layout. It has:

Horizontal alignment: Left, Column
Vertical alignment: Top, Line

But the result of those settings is, as I described, that the images are indented the same as the first line of each paragraph.

Hi. Craig. I have attached a .doc with examples. Paragraph 1 set with indent but no image, and then copied twice below. Para 2, with inserted image (resized down for convenience after inserting), as it comes in automatically. Para 3, with the image's position and wrapping adjusted.

This way, you can check the settings yourself.

I can't get it over to the left margin, but I can get it fairly close with those settings, so I can live with that.
