List Style or just numbered list
I haven't seen this answered directly anywhere, so I'll ask.
I am creating a document that has several levels of headings (currently 4). I have it like this: TITLE centered HEADING1 left 1. HEADING2 - text not bolded (used character formatting) A. HEADING3 - text not bolded (used character formatting) i) HEADING4 - text not bolded (character formatting) I have a style that includes all the headings. I then select and turn off the heading style for the plain text at each level. I wanted to have the paragraph style for each level include the numbering, but when i try to apply a List Style for all the numbering, it turns off the paragraph style for the headings/text. So, do I have to manually add the Numbered multilevel List, or is there a way to incorporate it with the Paragraph style? |

In general, the numering and bulleting buttons are a shortcut to confusion <g> First stop for any information on more robust numbering is Shauna Kelly's invaluable site: try, specifically, http://www.shaunakelly.com/uncategor...numbering.html
Not sure why you mention character formatting: a paragraph style (such as a heading) includes the character settings. You don't normally need to apply a character style over the top of a paragraph style. |

Shauna's site is intermittent right now. Here is an alternative link.

For assistance with setting up numbering, see the article written by Shauna Kelly (the link has already been posted here).
Are you saying that you want only part of the paragraph to be formatted as a heading (and included in the TOC, if there is one)? In that case, insert a style separator, for example using the shortcut Ctrl+Alt+Enter. When working with style separators, you may want to display nonprinting marks, because that makes things a lot easier. "Ordinary" paragraph marks are represented by pilcrows, ¶, while style separators are represented by ¶ characters surrounded by a dotted line.

Style Separators did the trick. The effect I wanted was two styles on the same line, something like this:
HEADING STYLE: Normal Text Style |
