Default Editing .dotm/.dotx/dot file

When I select 'New Microsoft Office Word Document' from the context menu, or create a new document by making a new tab, the Word file started always has 'double line-spacing' set as default. In other words, when I press the return key, I get this:

x

x

x

instead of this:

x
x
x

I have to go in to the paragraph tab and check the box 'don't add space between paragraphs of the same style' every time I start a new document. How do I set up the template so that this happens by default? There are so many dotx files to choose from, 45, (but no dotm) and I have no idea which is used when starting new Word documents.

Help appreciated. Thanks,

Martin

The right-click option (in Windows Explorer) that creates a new blank Word document does not make use of your current Normal.dot settings, as you have noticed. I seem to recall a registry tweak that fixes this, but I don't remember what it was...

On the desktop, you can put a shortcut which starts Word; this is an easy fix.

Thanks. I am using the shortcut method (in program shortcuts folder and set to open with Ctrl+Shift+W), but if anyone knows the registry tweak you refer to, so that I get the same via the context menu or tab, that'd be great.

Don't know the registry tweak, I'm commenting on the use of the Enter key to create a new line. A line break is inserted with Shift-Enter. The Enter key, by itself creates a new paragraph, thus the space between.

A Word Processor is not a typewriter. Trying to use it as one will always be frustrating. 2.1 Why you should not press Enter at the end of every line

"A Word Processor is not a typewriter". Yeah, thanks for the heads up...

No one's pressing 'Enter' at the end of a line. The format of the dotx file has the line spacing set like that: text moves to the next line automatically as you type of course. I have to change the formatting of the document manually every time to close up the spacing. Hence my question..

This YouTube link should help you:

Shows what you need to reset the defaults (set to how you want to start out each time)...

This is the line spacing setting in the Style that is being used, then. Modify the Style you use or create a new Style to use. I use Body Text for most of my work.

If you have Office XP you are working with Word 2002.

Create a new blank document. Under the Format menu, select the "Styles and Formatting" choice. A list of styles should pop up with the one in use highlighted in some way. Right-click on that and choose modify. A dialog box will pop up. On that box you want the checkbox to "add to template" checked and any box about automatic updating unchecked.

Click the Formatting button in the lower left corner and choose "Paragraph." That box has the setting for line spacing. Set it for single spacing and then OK your way out. Close the document and Word. If a question comes up about saving changes to the normal template, answer yes.

Restart Word and see if your change stuck. If not, write back.

Except reading your original post about .dotx files, you can't be using Office XP!

Which version are you using?

Have you already set up your defaults in the normal template?

So far, I haven't been able to locate the web site that describes how you can alter the behavior of the New Word Document right-click (context) command in Windows Explorer. (Frankly, I don't even remember if the workaround can be used for any versions of Word and Windows, so it may not apply to your system anyway.)

For easy access to the template of your choice, you can add a shortcut on the desktop. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/210565/en-us/.

I'll try to follow up the links, thanks. I have Office 2007. I changed this in my profile this morning (sorry for having left it out of date when I originally posted this - I didn't notice), and it shows correctly there, but it still shows wrongly in my posts for some reason.

Later: Just posted this and see that my Office version shows up correctly now
