![]() Hello I have a Safety Manual that is a Word document (Word 97-2003) saved in compatability mode. I would like to add another word document (SWMS- which has tables, footers and headers, company logos etc in it ) to the Safety Manual. I have tried the object insert icon and insert text from file icon but the document ends up all over the place and missing some parts. Is there any way to insert one whole document into another. Sounds simple enough but it appears not, Thank you in advance |

Inserting one document into another requires use and understanding of Sections in Word. Sections / Headers and Footers in Microsoft Word 2007-2013 Working with Sections (or Why Word appears to behave so illogically when you delete or move a section break or How to preserve section formatting when pasting between documents) by Dave Rado, MVP I assume that you are using Word 2007 and want to retain the .doc format. You will have to have display of non-printing formatting characters turned on. Ctrl-Shift-8 on the keyboard. The command used to be Insert > File. Now it is Insert Tab > Object > Text from File |

Thanks Charles
I have tried that and unfortunately Word chooses which text to add, where to put it and also adds extra pages which I cant get rid of. Also find it very hard to re-format. Very frustrating . thanks for taking the time to answer though. Sandi (SWMS means safe work method statement - the document I am working on ) |

Unfortunately, Word works very well combining documents that are formatted using well-thought-out styles and without direct formatting. It does poorly when one or more of the documents was written by someone who was using Word as a substitute for a typewriter. Basic concepts of Microsoft Word: An introduction Understanding Styles in Microsoft Word Why use Microsoft Word’s built-in heading styles? Unfortunately, few people are trained on how to use Word intelligently. Instead they are trained to get a document out that looks like they want, but may be a nightmare to edit. |

The extra pages are probably due to section breaks but be careful about deleting them because they hold your page setup and header/footer information for the section and when you delete the break before two sections the formatting of the second section is applied to the first.
