Hi can anyone help me get rid of the annoying 'thing' showing on every line and space please? I must have accidently pressed something I have loads of things to copy to a Word doc and it's making for difficult reading with this 'thing' on every line.

The thing is called a pillcrow and it designates the end of a paragraph. It is one of the non-printing formatting characters you can display. I keep it turned on virtually all of the time because in a properly-formatted Word document you should have no empty paragraphs. What do all those funny marks, like the dots between the words in my document, and the square bullets in the left margin, mean? , MVP and Dave Rado, MVP

Short answer to your question: Ctrl-Shift-8 or Ctrl-* toggles display of these. If it does not switch it off for you, write back. There is a more involved method involving options settings.

Thank you. It has gone now, but your reply also patially solved how I managed to get the pillcrow... I was using the - on the numeric keyboard to do a line between two items and of course it's next to the * - not sure how the Ctrl key fitted in though.

It is only the * on the regular (not numeric) keyboard that does this, the Shift-8 character (above and between U and I on my keyboard).
