Word 2000 frozen, then not working even after re-install
A colleague of mine was working normally in MS Word 2000 when the application froze without an error message. I came over and ended the process via Task Manager, and she logged off the computer. MS Word could not be accessed – the error message (the application has encountered a problem and needs to close) came up. I used the original CD and attempted a repair followed afterwards by re-installation of the Office Suite, but halfway through got the message “Unable to access configuration for Microsoft Personal Web Server”. When I clicked OK, the repair/re-installation process continued and finished - but in a shorter time than usual. Same error message after the computer was re-installed. I was able to install the Office suite on another computer so she is able to work remotely. Does anyone have an idea of what the problem could be, or what can be done? Thanks! Computer Specs:

I have addressed your problem in another reply here you might find helpful on why the conventional Uninstall is not enough

Please do let me know if it works
I know it sure works for me Use to drive me insane about why Uninstall/Reinstall would NOT solve a problem, particularly with a darn browser See, in the M$ Universe there are 2 big misnomers:
In both instances you have to drill way, way deeper |

Surprise Solution
MS Word could not be accessed – the error message (the application has encountered a problem and needs to close) came up. I used the original CD and attempted a repair followed afterwards by re-installation of the Office Suite, but halfway through got the message “Unable to access configuration for Microsoft Personal Web Server”. I tried all of the solutions listed here, even the one that is linked above. I had this happen on two computers, and then it hit me, each time, I had just installed the free trial version of Adobe Acrobat Pro X. On a whim, I uninstalled that program, and my Word 2000 began to work normally again. I don't have enough knowledge to know why this fix worked, but it did for me. |

Hi dvportin,
Interesting. Is your office 2000 installation fully updated (as old as it is)? FWIW, uninstalling Adobe Acrobat Pro X wouldn't have worked back in 2009, as it didn't exist back then.

I think it is up to date. I can read .docx files, so it should have all of the updates.

Hi dvportin,
That only means you've installed the Office 2007 File Format Converters, which are not an Office 2000 update per se. You should be able to check the SP status via Help|About. This should show that you have SP3 installed. After SP3 was released, MS also issued the following updates for Office 2000: kb822035, kb824936, kb824993, kb826292, kb830347, kb830349, kb835220, kb873372, kb873380, kb889167, kb894540, kb895333, kb905553, kb905555, kb905757, kb914797, kb918424, kb920822, kb920910, kb923090, kb923093, kb923274

Word 2000 would not open
I uninstalled WinZip which was the latest programme I had installed. Problem solved.
WinZip has now informed me that the problem was not with the main WinZip programme but with an evaluation installation available for WinZip Courier which has issues with Word 2000. I have now reinstalled WinZip without Courier. Word 2000 now works fine. Last edited by Gooner; 05-25-2012 at 01:51 PM. |
