Word Cursor Loses Focus

I am having a very annoying problem in Word at the moment. I have a new computer with Windows 8 and Office 2010 installed. When I am reading a word document I will often leave the cursor over the vertical navigation bar of the document so that when i left click the mouse the display pages down the document.

However, I am finding that the first time I click for a page down it works fine, but then after I have left the cursor for a short while (5-10 seconds) this no longer works. I can see the cursor on the scroll bar, but left clicking the mouse does nothing. I have to move the cursor again to activate it.

This means that while i am reading a document, each time I want to page down I need to move the cursor off the scroll bar and then back onto it again to page down.

Can anyone advise how to fix this.
