Heading level numbering in 2010 - wrong after second header level 1
Hello
I am trying to create a new template which needs 3 levels of numbered headings. Our company style (which worked OK in 2003) is: - 1 Header level 1 1.1 Header level 2 1.1.1 Header level 3 Now this seems to still be working OK until I start a second section. This is what I want/used to have: - 1 Header level 1 1.1 Header level 2 1.1.1 Header level 3 2 Header level 1 2.1 Header level 2 2.1.1 Header level 3 2.2 Header level 2 2.2.1 Header level 3 but I get: - 1 Header level 1 1.1 Header level 2 1.1.1 Header level 3 2 Header level 1 1.2 Header level 2 1.1.1 Header level 3 2.1.1 Header level 3 So it would seem that it is not recognising that a new header level 1 exists (called 2!) even though the numbering correctly picked up that this was the second header level 1. It is also then not picking up the level 2 heading under the second level 1 heading. Confused? Ahhh!! |

Automatic numbering in Word is broken. Always has been. It is better now, but, you need to follow a specific protocol linking the numbering to heading styles. If it seemed to be working for you before, you probably were just lucky.
Read the following and follow the directions, step-by-step. It works. Note that you can change the formatting of the headings (not headers) so that they look like the rest of your text if you want, or all look the same, if you want. I used the Shauna Kelly doc to set this up but....
I used the Shauna Kelly doc to set this up but....
I still get the problem. My heading 1 level has a page break before it - new page for each heading 1 level but because my header 2 level is based on the leader 1 level I am also getting a page break before level 2 (and then level 3). I have tried manually amending this but it still goes wrong with the numbering. Basically the numbering is wrong and then I have the added issue of each header having a page break before it but I only want this for the header 1 level. |

If your styles are cascading, change the paragraph formatting of Heading 2 to not have page break before.
I know how frustrating it can be. You have to set up all levels at the same time or you end up with different "list templates." That will give you the result you are seeing and there is no fixing it. You need to start over in a new document (template). If you follow the directions you will have numbering that works. It is not easy but it is straightforward. |
