Default Cut & Paste problem Office XP

I have been using Office XP for several years and had no problem with cut & paste, until just recently.

The problem is: if I have not got Word open and see something I wish to c&p, usually an article or something I am interested in, I go through the usual procedure of highlighting what I want to copy, press Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V, then open up Word.

After pressing paste, when Word is open, I am left with a blank page. If I return to where the text is still highlighted, c&p again, return to Word and paste, all is OK.

Can anyone explain what is going wrong and is there a work-round?

Thanks.

One of our XP machines recently developed a lot of copy and paste problems too. We got to the point where we set the clip board to always show when a copy command is given. That way, at least you know if the copy is working before you navigate away from the source page.
