Default Laying out a sum

Hi (first post), OK, i'm trying to write out some sums for someone at the moment but I'm not sure what the best way to get the lay out is.

I've just been doing basic addition / subtraction for them but now they want to do some basic addition in a different layout, where the numbers are on top of each other rather than next to.

I've attached what I mean, I've just drawn it in paint with a mouse.

I'm struggling to get the number's to line up nicely when using word. I'm sure it's basic but any helps much appreciated!

You can use table cells and set a numeric tab stop for the numbers.

THanks for the response, i have no idea what either of those are (unless a table cell is a table - i can make a table) but thankyou for your response.

Yes, I was referring to ordinary cells of a table. For more on tab stops, take a look at http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/SettingTabs.htm.

im guessing that i want to use a left tab stop (though there's a decimal one that might apply to some sums perhaps?)

Not sure how to use tabs within a table - the tab key just jumps to the next box

Im now trying to follow this - http://indesignsecrets.com/typing-ta...table-cell.php

Apparently i need to set a keyboard shortcut up in order to use tabs with the cell of a table.

But i don't know where the first element 'type' is from the list im meant to follow in order to set this up

cheers

You need a decimal tab stop; you can select multiple cells to set a tab stop for all cells at the same time. A decimal tab stop within a table doesn't require you to add a tab character manually. Word immediately moves the item to the location of the tab stop.

You can access the Tabs dialog box from the Paragraph dialog box, which you can display by clicking the dialog launcher button in the Paragraph group on the Home tab (the dialog launcher is the little arrow at the bottom of the Paragraph group; see the screen shot you posted earlier).

All this is discussed in the article at http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/SettingTabs.htm.
