Default converting word doc to e pub

I am trying to convert my word doc to e pub. When I uploaded it every paragraph was designated an entire page... so a 28 page manuscript turned into an unreadable 205 page one.

is there a quick fix for this... I am illiterate when it comes to word processers..

Oh I figured out that e pub meant e publishing. That was not difficult at all. But is there only ONE e publishing file format....??

Is there only ONE place to upload to???

If not, then it may help to actually know what you are doing. However, in any case I seriously doubt it has anything at all to do with Word. I really DO know word processors, and I doubt the paragraph to page has its source in Word.

Challenging if you're not that familiar with word-processing … but it sounds to me as though the first place you need to look is the settings for your e-pub conversion. (is that part of 2008 for Mac, by the way?) What I'd expect is an option to say "start new e-pub chapter every time you hit this style" – so you'll probably need to get your head round styles as well, but that is always recommended.
[btw – note that I used the word chapter and not page. epub files don't usually have pages]

For my own knowledge is e-pub a brand? A specific app? I am assuming that this conversion is a function of where ever your Word file is being uploaded to. In which case I suspect that eNGINe is correct. There is some setting in that app-web site. Not Word.

Also, I think it may be a very good question regarding styles - that would be the way I would do it. So....are you using explicit styles in yout Word doc?

look I don't know what i'm doing... I am a novice with word... but my first submissions were returned in need of formatting...big spaces between the paragraphs and the compression of the figures and title page stuff at the front of the book... Fair enough and i tackled with intensity only to get a 205 page e pub back for about a 30 page one. I've contacted the publisher and sent them in my problem and we'll see what they say.. i just thought i might have hit an icon inadvertently but someone previously responded that the problem might have been with e pub as well... Thanks I'm just in and I have mail from publisher in regard to the problem... If they say anything pertaining to doc or odt problems I'll pass it on...

Like I said, I doubt it has anything to do with Word, so being a novice in Word is probably not significant.

Please try and answer questions when they are asked. Where are you uploading this? Who is the epublisher? I would like to try and upload a document myself and see what happens.

Of course, this thread made me curious about e-pub so I had to search to read up on it. This link (using Word to create e-pubs) may be useful to you:

Ummmmmm. That link only covers making a Word document in to a PDF. This has nothing whatsoever to do with what was posted as a question.

Can we stick to the issue. This is not about creating PDF (at least I think it is not), as it is very easy to make a PDF from a Word document. The post mentions uploading. Once a Word document is made into a PDF uploading it is NOT going to change anything. It sounds like - and correct me if I am wrong - the upload CAUSES a change.

As klemens swib seems disinclined to really answer much I am going to leave the thread. I hope someone else can help.

First of all, the link was not posted for you but, for the OP. As the title of the link implies "Creating an E-Book in Word and PDF", I believe it does "stick to the issue". Now, if it helps the OP, I do not know. That is why I said it "may be useful to you" (speaking to the OP).

So, take (what appears to be) your condesending tone elsewhere. I could care less.

I did not say it was for me. No it does not stick with the issue. The link is - as you mention - creating an ebook in Word and PDF. However, the OP does not mention PDF at all. Therefore PDF is NOT an issue.

I am glad you care less. Why would you. I do not think I was being "condesending" [sic] at all. I was simply trying to state that PDF - what the link discussed - was not relevant. Sorry if that offended you. My apologies.

Less is more – a mild observation about the irrelevance of the link would have been enough, I think.

I agree, of course, that we need some more information about what process OP is using if he wants us to help with the problem; but he did already say he'd had some information from his publisher that might answer the question without us <g>

FWIW, this is the statement that I was responding to when I posted the link:

Within the link this is the statement I thought "may help" the OP:

"The most common file format for an e-book is Adobe Acrobat PDF. You'll be doing the actual "design" of your book in your word-processing program, however. (If you have a complex design that includes lots of illustrations, you may wish to use a desktop publishing program such as Pagemaker or Quark; however, that's beyond the scope of this article.) Since Word is the most commonly used wordprocessing program (and the program in which most e-publishers will expect your document), this column will focus on formatting in Word."

Beyond that, if it did not help...so be it!

I am done...
