How to stop caption number reset (Figure 1)
For some reason in the middle of a document I have a figure whose caption number should be 24, but it says Figure 1. I tried playing around selecting the existing wrong figure number and then inserting a SEQ field and somehow it did correct the figure, but basically as soon as I clicked out of there it updated back to 1. (And in any event trying to repeat this now is not working, so not too sure exactly how I got that temporarily fixed before.) Any suggestions to make sure the caption numbering continues instead of restarting at 1? Note this is the first figure after a section break (not the first one in the document) if that makes a difference. The next figure is after another section break, and its number is OK (it is 24!). |

I've found another issue in the document: after figure 25, it jumps back again to figure 1 ... adding this because these two figures are in the same section, so the issue does not appear to be related to section breaks.
Anyways, rather than fix I decided it would be quickest to re-do: I just went and manually selected each figure, right clicked and selected "Insert Caption..." and re-captioned everything. That solved the problem (except I now have to fix a bunch of figure references). Still interested though in knowing about how I would have fixed the original problem! |

Yet more oddities:
after manualling recaptioning, some figures didn't appear available to select as cross references: it seems those were embedded strangely (text flow around those was different)...I re-inserted them "normally" (and re-captioned them) to resolve this issue. But I next inserted a Table of Figures and several are missing! This includes those ones I had to manually re-insert and I think a few more. HOW CAN THIS BE? How is this fixed? |

I do not remember using the process for 2003 but, are you using the AutoCaption process outlined in this link:

More searching suggested this last problem might be related to tracked changes: sure enough I turn off track changes and accept all changes and re-generate the Table of Figures and it is OK now - all entries are showing.
Gee ... this "strathglass" guy is really helpful! |

JimP:
I am actually not advanced enough to use Auto Caption. I did just come across it when playing with the captions but have never used it. I should add that I did not create the document, I am just editing an existing document...so someone else may have originally added the figures with auto captioning (but I doubt it). |
