Hi all.
Well, after posting, I found a solution under 'Similar Threads' It appears that, since I had copied the document from the internet, it turns out that these characters are used in tables in HTML. I followed the instructions in the above Similar Thread and cut and pasted the characters in Edit>Replace All and each character was deleted all in one go. Surprising what you learn after using Word and HTML after nearly 20 years!
