Default Special Characters missing

I have sent a Word document to a client that contains special characters in the Times New Roman font. The client and I are both using the same versions of Windows (XP) and Word (2003). Although I can see the special characters when I open the document, the client is seeing either no character or a different character.

Both computers have the Times New Roman font installed; both have English (U.S.) as the default language.

I've tested several computers in my office, and they all display the special characters correctly. I've had the client test multiple computers and they all display the characters incorrectly.

Any ideas as to what could be the problem?

You could try embedding the text into the file!

Tools > Options > Save (tab) > Embed True Type Fonts (tick) > Embed characters in use only (tick) > Do not embed common system fonts (try with it ticked first time, then unticked , if that doesn't work!)
