Question Editing an existing template

Hello! I need to create a letter template where I can insert date, address, and name in multiple places. I tried using an existing template, and I copied and pasted some of the [Name] fields, but now when I enter a name, all of the fields are linked and my dates change to the name I've entered. I don't know the proper name for this (form fields, macros, fill-in-blanks) so researching how to create my own is difficult.

Basically I need a generic letter to send out to parents, and I need to change date, parent name, address, student name.

Any help?!
