Word Heading Levels
Hey folks!
First time post so hello everyone! I'm having REAL trouble figuring out how to use the heading levels which I need for the TOC. I have a document where sections are labelled (for example) as: 1 2 2.1 2.2 3 3.1 So basically some sections have subsections. Ok - so here's what I've done so far: A) Highlight heading '1' and in home selected the heading style. Cool, all good so far. B) Highlight heading '2' and in home selected the heading style. Cool, all good so far. C) Highlight what I want to be 2.1 (which has now automatically changed back to 1.) Now - here is where I get stuck!!! I can't get it to be labeled as 2.1. I've tried a bunch of things like right clicking on the number and trying to set nummber value manually. It doesn't work. Summary I bascially just want to be able to insert 'sub' levels (e.g 2.1, 2.2, 3.1 etc etc) Any help very much appreciated! Richard |

For the TOC you can use the basic Heading levels (or you can right-click and alter)
Heading 1----------1 ---Heading2----------1.1 ------Heading 3----------1.1.1 ---------Heading 4-----------1.1.1.1 BUT Sometimes, because there is so much text in between your original numbering, it gets forgotten, or muddled. I would suggest that you type the numbers manually rather than using the Bullets and Numbering lists. When making a normal list, to go to the next level you use the Tab key to go to the next level. e.g. 1 ---> 1.1 And Shift+Tab to go back one level. e.g. 1.1 ---> 1 Hope that helps! |

Thanks Big Bird!
I tried the tab trick - but it just 'tabbed' everything over to the right. I went manual in the end as you suggested and it seems to have worked fine! Thanks again, Spock |
