Default Word Heading Levels

Hey folks!

First time post so hello everyone!

I'm having REAL trouble figuring out how to use the heading levels which I need for the TOC.

I have a document where sections are labelled (for example) as:

1
2
2.1
2.2
3
3.1

So basically some sections have subsections.

Ok - so here's what I've done so far:

A) Highlight heading '1' and in home selected the heading style. Cool, all good so far.

B) Highlight heading '2' and in home selected the heading style. Cool, all good so far.

C) Highlight what I want to be 2.1 (which has now automatically changed back to 1.) Now - here is where I get stuck!!!

I can't get it to be labeled as 2.1. I've tried a bunch of things like right clicking on the number and trying to set nummber value manually. It doesn't work.

Summary

I bascially just want to be able to insert 'sub' levels (e.g 2.1, 2.2, 3.1 etc etc)

Any help very much appreciated!

Richard
