Default I create a new style but it fails to appear in Quick Style list

I just created a new style and saved it to the Quick Style list. When I open a new doc it isn't in the Quick Style list. I went in and made sure I clicked "All Styles" under Options and the name of my new style doesn't appear there either. Where did it go? And how can I create and save a new style so it actually appears in the QS list when I open new documents?

When you add to the quick style gallery, it only applies to the current document. Save the document as a template, or open an existing template and customize it.

Default further question

So there's no way I can create my own quick styles that will appear among the styles when I work with a doc that someone sends me? I ask because in my work I receive word docs from other people that I have to format, and it would really speed things up for me if I had a way to format with a single click, instead of laboriously entering font, type size, line and paragraph spacing, indents etc. etc. over and over and over each time.

You can create a template with your styles and attach it to the document being edited. Otherwise, you would want to create a global template to distribute styles.

You may want to look at the macro posted by Paul Edstein.
