Hello,

I am new here and have a quick question. I was wondering if it was possible to have an automatically generated table of contents that contains images. I applied 'heading x' to an image but it still doesn't appear in my TOC. I can't think of anything else...

In my experience, no, this cannot be done. You could place images behind your TOC, but this would be far from automatic.

Whilst initially I agreed with Charles's response I have just tried it and YES you can include a picture automatically in a TOC, however I am not sure why you would want to .

How I did it was attached a Heading style to the paragraph mark immediately to the bottom right hand corner of the picture.

It worked for me :-).

That suggests you were using an image formatted as in-line with text.

Tony, what format of image did you use? I can get an extra line to appear in the TOC but there is no image . I'm writing a little handbook and pictograms ill make the TOC much easier to navigate.

All I did was insert any picture into a blank Word document. Assigned a Heading 1 Style to the paragraph mark to the bottom right hand corner of the image.
Then inserted a Table of Contents and it appeared as a normal header in the TOC.

I cannot remove a figure from my TOC. It is a tif or jpeg file in a document that I am creating the TOC and keeps on showing up in the TOC. It does not seem to have a style designation.

The tif/jpeg probably has a Heading (1,2 or 3) style associated with it. Click the representative TOC to take you to where the graphic is located within the document then highlight the graphic and change the style to something other than Heading 1,2 or 3. Go back and update the TOC and the graphic should be removed.

Other posters may offer other/better solutions.

Either you have inserted the image in-line into a paragraph with a Heading Style, or you have inserted the image with wrapping (e.g. square) and anchored it to a paragraph with a Heading Style. The solution is to:
• change the paragraph Style for an image inserted in-line into a paragraph; or
• move the anchor to a different paragraph for a wrapped image anchored to a paragraph.
It is not possible for the image to have been inserted in-line into, or anchored to, a paragraph that does not have a Style applied.

Not clear what you mean by image inserted "in-line" or what style i can change to for an image inserted "in-line."

Select the image, then click on the Ribbon’s "Format Picture" tab, then "Wrap Text" (in the Arrange group). The highlighted option will reflect whichever wrap format you're using. For a visual description, see: http://www.dummies.com/software/micr...-2011-for-mac/

If the wrap format is anything other than 'In line with text', merely clicking on the image will probably be sufficient to display an anchor symbol showing what the image is anchored to.
