Default chapter number in page margin

Hello,

In my PhD dissertation I would like to have the section/chapters highlighted on the page margins with a number in a black box. For each section this black box should be located increasingly further down along the page margin, so that you can see the individual parts clearly from looking at the side of the book.

Is there any quick and painless way of making this in Word?

Many thanks in advance.

Kim

In a word, no.

Whilst one could do the first part (a number in a black box) easily enough, there is no 'easy' way of achieving "black box should be located increasingly further down along the page margin".

Hi Kim
Not sure if this is what you are looking for but have a look at the sample document I have provided. This is achieved by having a 2 column table with the borders set as "None". Also the Heading One style is used in column 1 with white lettering on a black background. The heading one style will centre on the cell depth not the number of paragraphs.
Hope this helps.
Good luck.
Tony
