Word 2010 will not open 2003 files
I recently installed 2010 after using 2007 and now cannot open a number of my files created in 2003 (all in 2003 because of our customer). I've been searching the forum and found there were problems with creating/saving files on external media and that you have to have compatibiity checking turned on. 1) These files were created on my hard drive, not on external media. 2) Under File|Info, compatibility is checked under prepare files. Screen shot of message attached. Neither text recovery tool or Open & Repair worked. Any suggestions? |

Word 2010 will not open 2003 files
Appreciate your response. Checked the tutorial -- it's about converting a 2003 to a later version. I can't even open the documents I'm referring to because I don't have 2007 on my system any longer, so I can't resave in the docx format. I didn't have this problem until after I uninstalled 2007. I wonder if something happened (like to my registry settings) when I did the uninstall.
I would think that there's an answer from Microsoft somewhere in cyberspace! I'm not the only one experiencing this problem. Thanks for trying! |

Word 2010 will not open 2003 files
OK, Tony, here's a 2-page document that will serve as a sample. I tested it again, and I get the same error message.

Hi
Thanks for posting a sample document. I have opened the document using Word 2010 with no issues. This suggests you have an issue with the configuration of your version of Word 2010. Have you tried running a repair of your installation? If you have Word 2010 AND Word 2007 loaded then this MAY be an issue (it shouldn't be but it is possible). Tony |

Originally I had 2007 installed when I installed 2010. I got tired of Office starting an installation of 2007 every time I double-clicked a document, so I uninstalled it. Maybe somthing in the registry got altered in some way in that process.
To repair the installation, I use the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel, right? I suppse, if that doesn't work, I should uninstall 2010 and then reinstall it, right? Many thanks for testing. |

I'll try a repair using the Add/Remove Programs control panel. If that doesn't work, then I'll have to uninstall/reinstall 2010. Right? (Thanks for testing.) |

Hi
There may be an issue with your Registry. Do you have a product such as "Registry Mechanic" which will clean up your Registry for you. I use it regularly and it certainly helps me. It may also negate you having to remove and re-load Word. Good luck. Tony |

The repair did the trick! But I will look into Registry Mechanic. Does it require familiarity with working in the registry? I don't have that know-how. I made one change several years ago -- but following specific instructions from the forums.
