Do you want the first numbered page showing page 1 to be on the 6th page of your document? or
Do you want the first page of your document to show the page number 6? or Do you want to start numbering on the sixth page of your document with the number 6? See Sections / Headers and Footers in Microsoft Word 2007-2010 if you are using Word 2007 or later. If an earlier version there is a link at the beginning of the article to a similar article for earlier versions of Word. |

OK
There's an excellent article on that: How to set up a document with front matter numbered separately - 2007/2010 by Suzanne Barnhill, MVP |

It does.
The article was written for 2007 to distinguish it from non-ribbon versions of Word. The ribbon put the commands in different places from earlier versions. |

If the 6th page is a new section, do you have "different first page" selected in the header/footer controls?

Look at your Header and Footer Tools in the Ribbon.
Sections / Headers and Footers in Microsoft Word 2007-2010 Look for the checkbox for Different First Page. If it is checked, copy all the text in your header or footer, then uncheck it. Paste the text back in. |

Hi
You need to use a Section break on page 5 (Next Page Section Break). Then in the first section format your page numbers in the Footer as Roman Numerals. Then move to Section 2 and click in your Footer then de-select the "Link to Previous" in the toolbar. Then insert a new page number and change the Start at Page to 1. This will resolve your issue. See attached document as an example. Good luck. Tony |
