Linking to Bookmarks
I have an issue with linking to bookmarks (from footnotes) in my word document which has only just started happening in the past couple of days.
I want to link a footnote to a bookmarked section in my document, so, I highlight the text and click hyperlink. I then select bookmark and then the appropriate bookmark that I want it linked to. However, when testing the link it links to that named section in the table of contents at the beginning of the document. If I view the link which goes to the incorrect section it reads as "#Appendix 2 Manufacturers Literature". However, I do have a link that does work and goes to the same section in the document, and the link reads different: "#_Appendix_2_ Manufacturers_Literature". Edit: Well, the second link did work but now it simply takes me back to the first page in the document when clicked, so, neither of them work! Is there any reason that may be causing this? I have hundreds of links in the body of the document that appear to be working ok. |

What happens if, in the body of the document, you press F5 (goto) choose the bookmark option and select your bookmark?

That said, I still need to link it however I think most of my styles have now become custom styles so I guess I must use bookmarks? |

If you're not using one of the objects listed in the Goto dropdown, then yes, you'll need to apply bookmarks.

For this to work, you will have to manually create a bookmark (via Insert | Bookmark) enclosing the hyperlink target and then hyperlink to the bookmark.

I find this a little confusing.
I have 24 appendices in my document. Each appendix has a "Maintenance" section. I can link to any Maintenance section (which is a Header 1 style) from the main body text of the document (even though each link has exactly the same name, it still links to the correct page). Anyway, if I then try and link from a footnote to the same Maintenance section (which I have already successfully linked in the main body text), then the footnote links just diverts to the main Maintenance section listed in the table of contents at the beginning of the document (there is another maintenance section before you get to any of the appendices). I can of course get around this as you say by creating a bookmark for these sections (where a footnote needs to be linked); though it just seems strange that I can link to the correct section when linking from the body text, but when it comes to a footnote it won't link to the same section, it diverts to the tabe of contents. |

I see what you mean, and it appears to be a limitation with hyperlinks from footnotes. Try inserting a cross-reference to the heading instead; cross-references are hyperlinked by default.
