I think Word 2010 has become so complicated to use with all the options that I can no longer intuitively do simple tasks.

I have a contract where I have set line spacing at 1. This produces single spacing if I just type and the program goes to a next line automatically. However, when I hit “Enter” to move down a line the spacing is still too wide. It looks like it is going down 1.5 or 2 lines. What do I have to do to make the whole document single spacing?

I think I have tried everything. I have selected all and chosen single spacing for the entire document, but no matter what I do some paragraphs have bigger line spacing than others. I just want to have single space throughout the document.

I went to styles and changed to no paragraph spacing, but nothing helps.

Hi crescere,

I think you need to learn how to use Word as it is designed to be used. A fundamental aspect of this is the use of Styles, as every paragraph in a document will have a Style attached to it. Word has worked this way for well over 20 years. The fact you "think Word 2010 has become so complicated to use" is probably because you've never taken the time to learn the basics. In most respects, Word 2010 is no more complicated to use than earlier versions. Indeed, little has changed from it's immediate predecessor, Word 2007. Sure, the Ribbon requires some re-learning, but it doesn't make things 'more complicated'. And, for tasks that can be done by typing in the document and/or via shortcut keys and the like, it's much the same as before.

As to your immediate problem, updating a paragraph Style will update the formatting of all paragraphs based on that Style. There are various ways you can do this, but perhaps the simplest is to change the format of the paragraph concerned, then right-click on it, choose Styles>Update (stylename) to match selection. Do be aware, though, that if you've been overriding the Style definitions with other paragraph layouts, the paragraphs with the overridden definitions are liable update as well. Such problems would be avoided if you used Styles properly from the outset, with separate Styles for each of the required paragraph formats.

I am simply trying to type a lease contract. Each clause is numbered. It seems on some "paragraphs" when I hit enter it single spaces, but other times it goes down two spaces. How do I simply make it so that ALL lines are single spaced and I simply chosse where I want more space by hitting the Enter button? What format do I pick for a contract?

I am sure Word is a wonderfull program, but I just want to use it for a very simple function yet it is adding fancy features I do not want.

As I've already said, paragraph formatting is controlled via paragraph Styles. If some paragraphs are giving differrent spacing than others, that's most likely because they're using different paragraph Styles. If you want to make all lines single-spaced, the correct way to do this is by modifying the underlying Styles, which the links I posted in your other thread show you how to do. In Word 2010, the default paragraph Style (Normal) uses an 11pt Calibri font, left-aligned text, a 1.15 time multiple line spacing (which gives 12.65pt), 0pt before and 10pt after paragraph spacing. If you want to change that Style for all new documents, see:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/wo...001121028.aspx

If you don't like Word's use of Styles and the other features it provides, perhaps you should use WordPad for the bulk of your work, at least - it's free and comes with Windows.
