Well, after a protracted bout of arm-wrestling I managed to set the visual properties of change-tracking the way I wanted … pity they didn't travel with the document, but that's Word ;-}

I'm mildly curious to know whether Comments have properties the user can set, or whether I'm stuck with elastoplast* pink … given a free hand, it wouldn't be my first choice.

You can set the color of comment balloons in the Track Changes Options dialog box, but these options are user-specific and machine-specific.

To change the appearance of comment text, modify the Comment Text and Balloon Text paragragh styles. Style formatting does travel with the document, of course.

Thanks, Stefan – I hadn't thought of looking for Comments properties under Track changes …

fwiw, positioning the cursor in the text of a comment, opening the Apply styles pane and clicking Modify crashes Word. "Close three times on a fault", so I've checked this three times before posting ;-}

Hmm, I've never had Word crash when clicking Modify in the Apply Styles pane. Have you tried repairing your Office installation?

I'll bear it in mind, keep a list of crash-triggers as I identify them, and suppress my immediate thoughts starting "Have you tried asking a corporate IT department to …" <g>
