Default Track changes line on right hand side of document won't go away

I've been using the MS Word track changes feature and I think that this line at the right edge of my text indicates that there is a change which has been neither accepted nor rejected but click on the line does not highlight the change. Clicking on it and choosing accept or reject just moves me to a position further down the document and does not eliminate the line. How can I remove the line?

Clicking on the change bar does nothing - you need to accept/reject the change in the body of the document. Try activating the Reviewing Pane so you can see what the revision is. You can also accept/reject the change there.

Can you see the screenshot? I was in the reviewing pane and I clicked accept and reject. Neither helped.

What I see in your screenshot is the Navigation Pane, not the Reviewing Pane.

At the top is the review ribbon with the accept and reject buttons on it.

That is not the Reviewing Pane; it's the Ribbon's Review tab. You activate the Reviewing Pane via the Reviewing Pane dropdown on that tab...

Why? There's already approve and reject buttons on the ribbon and they don't work.
