Default WORD 2000 problems

For sometime now many of my WORD 2000 documents will not open after they have been dragged and dropped to a folder? I cut and paste documents when I want to move one now, and that works great.

But the many documents that I still am unable to open, or delete, are still there. When I do try to open one I get a blank WORD page with as popup that states that 'the document name or path is not valid. It suggests to 1 Check permissions, and 2 Try the Open File option...neither helps.

I have un-installed and re-intalled OFFICE, but that did not help.

Also, I am considering upgrading to a later version of OFFICE (just for Home use), and would appreciate any suggestions. I have been looking at Office 2007, 2010, and 2013, and reading about the pros & cons. Office 2000 meets my needs (when it works), but maybe it's time for an upgrade?

I am running Windows 7 64 bit.

3/27/13 UPDATE:

I was finally able to resolve all of my problems by doing the following:

1. I did some research and ended up downloading the free Shareware called Kingsoft Office, it runs much like MS WORD 2007 and earlier...and seems to be seamless with all of my Word documents...so far I really like it...and it's FREE. Plus I also get their version of Excel, Powerpoint, etc.

2. For those remaining documents that still would not open I did the following:
I clicked on Properties of each such document, went to Security, then to Advanced, then to Change Permissions, then ADD, Selected Object Type as Users Only, Selected Location as Home PC, then went to the next box (Check Name) and typed in
HOME, then selected Full Control, then APPLY, then OK, OK, that made the changes necessary to give me full Control of each document. It's kind of a hassle, but if I do each document as needed it should be OK. As long as I do a CUT and PASTE for
each document I want to move them in the future there should be no more such problems.

Hope my experience may help someone else. I see a lot of posts out there of those with the same problem!

Best!
Ronbo

Hi Ronbo,

I suggest doing a System Restore to whatever is the last recorded Restore Point from before you installed 'Word Repair.Exe'. That should fix whatever it's done to Word, but it won't help restore your files. For those, I suggest a file restore from whatever backups you've made.

Hi Macropod,

I should have thought of that...that fixed the problem. But I'm afraid the other problem has gone on for too long to try and fix it with a Reset.

Any suggestions for the best MS Office upgrade for me. I don't need a lot of whistles and bells, just enough to get the job done, and will work with Windows 7, and maybe 8.

Thanks!
Ronbo

About the 'lowest' recent version you can get is Office 2010. At the moment, Office 2013 is having some teething troubles, so I'd be inclined to stay away from that.

IMHO, unless you believe you need access to the features that have been added to Word 2007 & later, you're probably just as well off staying with Office 2000 until you need to upgrade to Win 8 or later. That said, I do note that Office 2000 isn't actually compatible with Win 7, so it might be advisable to upgrade to at least Office 2003 (you should be able to pick up a legit copy on ebay fairly cheaply). Office 2007 & later have an entirely different 'menu' structure that will take some getting used to - a lot of people complained when they first encountered it and 6 years on I still see people posting in various forums asking how they can get the old menus back.
