Default Creating styles in Word - alphanumeric lists

I am writing a long procedure and instead of re-creating the alphanumeric list each time (having to format etc) I want to create a style I can apply whenever I need to use it. however, when I do that, the letters or numbers just continue instead of restarting at 1 or a in a new section:
Heading 1:
a
b
c
Heading 2
d
e
f

I want it to be:
heading 1
a
b
c
Heading 2
a
b
c

What do I need to do in creating the style to tell it to start over when there is a new section?
Thank you
Michelle

You do not need to recreate the style. All you need to do is adjust when needed. I have found that one quick way to do that is to right-click (or, highlight then right-click) on the text where you want to restart (at 3. or c. - whatever number/letter style you are using). A popup menu will appear - then click on "Restart at 1" or "Restart at a" (again, whatever number/letter style you are using).

Hope that helps...

No that doesn't help because it is not what I asked. I know how to do what you detailed already. That isn't what I want to do - I want to recreate a style. If you don't know - simply say so instead of throwing out an response that doesn't answer the question.

Well then, if that does not tickle your fancy, what exactly do you mean by "recreate a style"?

Will this help? http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/styles/tipsonstyles.html

I think there should be some information on the Shauna Kelly site that will help – and it is more productive to use styles (as you suggest) to restart numbering than it is to apply a manual override every time. Good luck!

I must be missing something. If the originator is already using a specified style to define the alphabetic listing and, assuming they are using the same style throughout the document, what good does it do to "recreate" another style that does the same thing? What am I missing?

OP said "recreate list", not "recreate style".

Take another look at both of her (Michelle's) entries...they both indicate recreating a style...But, nevermind...I am done...
