By inserting a chart in a MS Word file, the data by default is in the workbook "chart in microsoft office word". Where is the "chart in microsoft office word?" Thanks |

Hi Boo,
Right-click on the chart and choose 'Edit' to gain access to the data sheet underlying the chart.

Thanks, Paul. I am interested to find the location (drive/folder) of the Xls file where the data is stored. Thanks

Unless you originally sourced it from an external workbook, it's embedded in the Word document.

chart in microsoft office word
Thank you, Mr. Edstein. By trying to edit the data, and Excel file opens. Doesn't this indicate that there is a separate workbook saved somewhere? I am not sure that I understand what xls is embeded in doc means.

No, it means the worksheet is embedded in the document (ie it is a part of the document). Office has had this feature for at least 20 years.

Thanks again, Mr. Edstein. Is there a link(s) that sheds light on this concept though it is 20 years old. At this point, I would educate my self a bit. Regards.

See:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/wo...010120810.aspx http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/wo...010198874.aspx Although these articles mainly concern copying/pasting charts from Excel, the same principles re embedding apply to charts created directly in Word.

chart in microsoft office word
I looked at the two articles and now know where the data is. My understanding is that there is an xls sheet but hidden (i.e. embedded) in the doc file algorithm. In other words, no way to find it. I guess that is life (
Thanks so much for taking the time. Best regards |

Not if you're looking for an external file.
If you see a file with an object like a chart or a worksheet and the file doesn't have any links to an external file, you know the object is embedded, rather than linked. That being the case, you can find the data in the Word document by opening the embedded object itself.

In life, any thing is "obvious" IF and WHEN we understand it. After your replies, I am able to follow your comments. I am comfortable with the linked options.
Thanks so much for all your help. We never know, we may meet again on the cyber highway. Best regards. |
