Default fields/macro broke on my due now thesis

I have a word 2010 (win7) docx of my almost due PHD thesis that has automatic fields for the updating the 'table of contents' and 'figures' where I can click on each block ( they gray) and right click on update field , which allows it to update text and and page numbers. It has worked well for over a 3 years. I used a half working macro ( for zotero) and it broke everything. I got rid of that macro now. But I still see this {TOC \h \z \c ""figure"} instead of the fiel text. It seems to be all there and I can click toggle field codes to see the correct info ( one at a time), but it always defaults to the code and update field does not work well. BUT ONLY ON THIS VERSION OF WORD ON MY DESKTOP where I ran the bad macro. I use the exact same docx file ( on dropbox) and it works fines on my word 2012 on my laptop. So this is specific my desktop word 2010, not the thesis docx file. Can anyone suggest what I busted on this desktop version of Word that makes these fields in the file not work correctly. I repaired thsi version of Word, I removed normal.dotm, then I replace normal.dotm with the one from my laptop and 3 other things but nothing seems to fix the problem. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Hi Steve,

The field code display setting, which you can toggle on/off via Alt-F9, is a system setting sored in the Windows Registry, not a document setting, so it only affects documents on the PC concerned. And, as it's a registry setting, repairing, uninstalling/reinstalling Word and editing/deleting the Normal template won't affect it.

A couple of questions:
1. Are you saying that pressing Alt-F9 doesn't work?
2. How did you remove the zotero addin? See: http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/...e-word-plugin/ for uninstallation advice.

Thanks, unstalling zotero correctly seems to have done the trick. Now Alt-F9 working. Panic over. To be clear it wasn't Zoteros Word plug-in that broke all , but a variant of it that someone on that forum was writing (snd still debuggig) to up it functionality (double linking of refs). It searched for fields and changed them, which mucked up a few things. Panic over , back to normal again - now just have to keep writing a thesis content.

THANKS
